Shin Dong-hee (born September 28, 1985), better known by his stage name Shindong (신동) is a South Korean rapper, dancer, host, radio personality, and video director under SM Entertainment. He is the Lead Rapper and Lead Dancer of group Super Junior and it's subunits Super Junior-T and Super Junior-H.

Career[]

Hosting and Variety shows[]

Shindong debuted his hosting career in the music industry shortly after Super Junior's formation, serving as an MC on Mnet's M! Countdown from November 2005 alongside group members Leeteuk and Kangin, a role he maintained for three years until 2008. His engaging on-stage presence and quick humour helped establish him as a reliable emcee for music broadcasts. They left as hosts to prepare for their upcoming Asia tour Super Show and the new upcoming album.[1] (In Korean)

Transitioning to variety programming, Shindong gained prominence as a regular panelist and co-host on SBS's Strong Heart from 2009, where his comedic timing and relatable anecdotes contributed to the show's success as a talk-variety format. For his contributions, he received the Best Newcomer in Variety Show award at the 2010 SBS Entertainment Awards.[2]

Personal life[]

2007 Car Accident[]

On the evening of April 19, 2007, Shindong while journeying home after a long day of recording for the radio program "Kiss The Radio." He was traveling in the company van of SUPER JUNIOR, joined by two managers, as well as fellow members Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, and Kyuhyun. As the vehicle glided along the highway, the driver attempted to switch lanes when suddenly, a catastrophic event occurred—the left tire burst with a violent pop. In an instant, the car careened uncontrollably towards the guard rail on the driver's side. A surge of panic must have filled the van as it skidded across the asphalt, traveling nearly 30 meters before the weight of the moment forced it to flip over onto its right side. The intensity of the collision resulted in significant injuries to everyone onboard, with Leeteuk and Kyuhyun suffering the brunt of the impact.[3] Shindong only sustained minor injuries from the crashn icluding cuts and bruises to his face and legs, allowing him to resume activities within a week. However, Leeteuk endured a harrowing ordeal, requiring approximately 180 stitches to mend the wounds inflicted by the crash, and Kyuhyun faced a more dire situation; he fell into a coma, clinging tenuously to life with the odds stacked against him. Miraculously, despite the grave nature of their injuries, all members eventually survived this traumatic accident.  Shindong and Kyuhyun talked about this on "Problem Child in House" Season 2 episode 14 Which aired July 3rd 2025.[4]

Military Service[]

Shindong was supposed to check in at the 306th battalion in Uijeongbu of Gyeonggido on November 25th. He originally delayed his enlistment due to a back injury and was postponed to March 24th.[5] These conditions led to his assignment to the 55th division's military band, where he served in a role involving performances rather than frontline duties.

He underwent basic training at the 28th Infantry Division in Yeoncheon before transitioning to his band duties. He therefore completed his service in the 55th army division's military band. Shindong was discharged on December 23, 2016, marking the completion of his service. Shindong was the fifth member to complete his military service.

In reflections shared after his return, he noted that the experience fostered greater personal discipline and highlighted the emotional support from fans, which sustained him through the period of absence from group activities.

Weight loss and health challenges[]

Throughout his career, Shindong has shared the tumultuous journey of his struggles with weight fluctuations, a battle that began in the early days with Super Junior. These ups and downs were worsened by relentless public body-shaming, both from netizens and the media. When he debuted in 2005, weighing approximately 90 kg, he quickly became the target of harsh scrutiny. Despite his talent, he faced a barrage of disparaging comments, particularly during promotional periods. Notably, in 2019, his appearance at various events drew scathing remarks from online users, who cruelly labeled him as unfit according to the rigid standards often associated with idol culture. [6]

Shindong's weight loss efforts started notably in 2009, when he shed approximately 20 kg through diet and exercise, motivated by a comment from bandmate Leeteuk about "how amazing it is that he lost so much and that he would loose even more next week".[7] Further transformations occurred during his mandatory military service from 2015 to 2016, where he lost 17 kg during initial training to meet fitness requirements, though he regained some weight later in service due to adjusted routines.[8]

A major milestone came in 2019-2020, prompted by a hyperlipidemia diagnosis; partnering with the Juvis Diet program, he reduced from 116 kg to 79 kg—a loss of 37 kg—primarily through strict dieting emphasising brown rice, anchovies, and lettuce wraps over intense exercise.[9]
