Cho Kyu-hyun (born February 3, 1988), better known mononymously as Kyuhyun (규현) is a South Korean singer, musical theatre actor, and television host under SM Entertainment. He is the Main Vocalist and Maknae of group Super Junior and it's subunits Super Junior-K.R.Y. and Super Junior-M.

History[]

Pre Debut[]

Kyuhyun's family is an educator family. His father said that the singer was greatly opposed to him debuting as a singer, in the educator's family. Kyuhyun was initially urged to study law, and become a lawyer, by his parents. Kyuhyun is known to have been a smart student in his schooling days, placing 2nd rank in middle school[1]. He has expressed a lot of interest in mathematics in particular, joining a Math Olympiad when he was younger, and won a bronze medal.[2] He later said that it would have been his choice in career had he not found a passion and a talent for music and become a singer.

After winning a bronze medal for a duet with a friend at the Chinchin Song Festival held in September 2005, his father agreed to grant his blessings if Kyuhyun was accepted into a prestigious university. He was signed by SM in February in 2006 and worked as a trainee for about two months until he debuted in May with Super Junior's single "U", ending the rotational group and making it fixed.

2007 Car Accident[]

On the evening of April 19, 2007, Kyuhyun while journeying home after a long day of recording for the radio program "Kiss The Radio." He was traveling in the company van of SUPER JUNIOR, joined by two managers, as well as fellow members Shindong, Eunhyuk, and Leeteuk. As the vehicle glided along the highway, the driver attempted to switch lanes when suddenly, a catastrophic event occurred—the left tire burst with a violent pop. In an instant, the car careened uncontrollably towards the guard rail on the driver's side. A surge of panic must have filled the van as it skidded across the asphalt, traveling nearly 30 meters before the weight of the moment forced it to flip over onto its right side. The intensity of the collision resulted in significant injuries to everyone onboard, with Leeteuk and Kyuhyun suffering the brunt of the impact. While Leeteuk endured a harrowing ordeal, requiring approximately 180 stitches to mend the wounds inflicted by the crash. Shindong and Eunhyuk only suffered minor injuries. Miraculously, despite the grave nature of their injuries, all members eventually survived this traumatic accident.[3] Shindong and Kyuhyun talked about this on "Problem Child in House" Season 2 episode 14 Which aired July 3rd 2025.

"I just blanked out right at the moment. When I woke up, I was lying on the road. It felt like my lower body was paralyzed. That’s when I felt like I was going to die soon, so I started to pray. Eunhyuk also ran to me and started praying together. I thought I was on my knees, but I wasn’t.  When I woke up, I was already in the hospital bed. They said I’ve been hospitalized for four days. So I rested for 4 to 5 months." - Kyuhyun

Kyuhyun faced a more dire situation than the other members; his serious condition required him to b taken to Kang Nam st. Mary's Hospital[4]. Kyuhyun, seated behind the driver’s seat during the accident, he suffered the most severe injuries among all the members. He was thrown 20-30 metres away from the car.[5] His condition was dire, with a broken foot that rendered him unable to walk, a fractured hip that was bleeding internally, broken ribs that had pressed against his lungs, and multiple facial scratches and bruises.[5] As he was in the hospital, he was slipping in and out of consciousness, in a coma for 4 days[6], clinging tenuously to life with the odds stacked against him with just a 20% chance of life.[6] Doctors said that in order to save him, they would have perform surgery on his throat to stabilise his breathing, medical professionals would have had to performed a tracheal resection surgery. This procedure involved making a 1-2 cm incision in his chest to insert a breathing tube, allowing air to flow more freely despite the pressure from his fractured ribs. [7] His father, who had arrived at the hospital while Kyuhyun was in a coma, made the decision to not have the surgery performed and pray that his son would survive anyway.[5]

"My son is a singer. Taking his voice is similar to taking his dreams. I can’t entirely agree with that." - Kyuhyun's Father Cho Young-hwan,

Miraculously, the doctors were able to perform an alternative surgery to his ribs, and Kyuhyun survived – beautiful voice still intact. Although, the shock of the accident left him nearly unable to speak for a bit, his voice faltering. Kyuhyun talked about this on "My Little Old Boy" Episode 169 Which aired December 22nd 2019.

Military Service[]

Kyuhyun was admitted to the Army boot camp in Nonsan, South Chungcheong for his three-week basic military training on May 25th 2017. After his training, due to the serious physical injuries, including a broken pelvis and chest issues, from the 2007 car accident, he was deemed ineligible for active duty. [8] Kyuhyun started his mandatory service at a state welfare institution in the Seongbuk district in Seoul in May 2017.[9]

Kyuhyun was discharged May 7, 2019. He was the final member of Super Junior to complete his mandatory service.[10]
